David Araujo, Program Director
David Araujo, M.D., Program Director

Hello and welcome to Merced! I am glad that you have chosen to interview with us. We believe strongly in the “family” part of Family Medicine and want to make you feel at home here. I believe our program has a lot to offer, and we are always looking for that special person who will be the best fit with our residents and faculty.

I trained at the residency program in Ventura. There I gained an appreciation for doing the full scope of family medicine while helping the socially and economically disenfranchised of our community. Here in Merced we work hard at meeting the real need in our community for health care.

I came to Merced in 1996 to join the faculty as Program Director. I grew up in Southern California, but was happy to leave the smog, traffic, and congestion behind me. In Merced we emphasize family, and try to promote a family atmosphere in the residency program. I enjoy my boys and wife, who helps me realize that there is more to life than just medicine. My daughter is also a delight! I love to run and ride bikes on the many bike trails in our town. I also enjoy sailplanes in my spare time.

My passion for the residency program is to see medical students transformed into caring and competent physicians who can serve their communities in any setting. I hope that you enjoy your visit and choose to train with us !
