The educational curriculum of the Mercy Redding Family Practice
Residency consists of a comprehensive program of 39 four-week rotation

Rotations
Internal Medicine:
The in-patient medicine rotations consist of block rotations in general medicine
inpatient service, night float, critical care and cardiology.
There are ambulatory experiences including Allergy & Immunology, Home & Hospice Care,
Long Term Care and a busy Dermatology clinic. All residents receive certification in
Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Surgery:
Surgery rotations include the general surgery/trauma service, orthopedics and sports medicine, ENT, urology, and ophthalmology. For residents with special interests, opportunities are provided for certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support.
Pediatrics and Obstetrics:
Pediatrics and Obstetrics have organizationally been intergrated into one rotation (POB) to
facilitate family centered OB and to make supervision more efficient. The component experiences are:
- Pediatric rotation consists of
the inpatient pediatric ward, outpatient pediatrics clinic, general
newborn nursery, and neonatal intensive care. The program has a
state-of the-art Telemedicine Program which links Mercy to the UC
Davis Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Special curriculum elements
include certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal
Advanced Life Support.
-
The curriculum includes four OB/Gyn rotations. Residents manage the
Mercy OB Clinic patients for prenatal and post partum care and deliver
those patients under the supervision of our obstetrical specialists.
Behavioral Science:
The curriculum begins in the first year with our Family and Behavioral Medicine rotation, focusing on the integration of behavioral science in the community and family practice settings as well as our longitudinal components throughout the three-year program.
Family and Community Medicine:
The expanded curriculum includes clinical experience in our rural
Hill Country Community Clinic, exposure to local community health
resources, and ongoing "Community-Oriented Primary Care".
Emergency Medicine:
The curriculum includes eight weeks in the Emergency Department
of Mercy Medical Center in Redding (Level II Trauma Center), and
St. Elizabeths in Red Bluff where there is a significant
migrant farm population. Experience in pre-hospital care, Mercy
Air Ambulance and trauma are also part of the residency program.
Other Rotational Components
Cardiology
This two-week block includes experience in outpatient cardiology,
cardiac assessment modalities, cardiac surgery and rehabilitation.
Night Float
Our curriculum includes a night-float rotation to cover internal medicine
and family practice admissions during the weekday evening hours. This
rotation was developed in a teamwork effort involving significant resident input.
This service is covered by third year residents (2 weeks), second year residents
(4 weeks), and first year residents toward the end of academic year (2 weeks).
Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
This rotation emphasizes outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine.
Time is spent with local orthopedic surgeons in their offices and at Mercy
Family Health Center. Mercy Family Health Center has incorporated both routine
and post-trauma orthopedic clinics. These clinics are staffed by residents working
closely with an orthopedic surgeon and orthopedic technician.
Outpatient Specialty Clinics
These rotations are dedicated to outpatient specialty clinical services,
based primarily at the Mercy Family Health Center and Shasta Community Health Center.
Residents actively provide care including colposcopy, psychiatry, HIV consultation,
dermatology, nutrition, allergy, orthopedics, gynecology, and minor
surgery under the supervision of appropriate attendings.
Rural Family Medicine
Our program is located in a unique setting, serving a local suburban
community and a vast remote rural catchment area of 33,000 square
miles. Having residents experience the realities of rural medicine
is a special focus of the program,
with a rural rotation during their second year at one of three sites
in the surrounding underserved mountain and rural communities. Residents gain invaluable
experiences including understanding referral patterns, stabilizing
and transporting trauma patients, and practicing the full range
of family medicine. The sites include rural mountain locations of Mt. Shasta and
Fall River. New in 2005, is the location of Tehama County Health Clinic in
Red Bluff which cares for a large Spanish speaking population.
Elective Rotations:
We believe that residents, as adult learners, need to determine
what they need to learn and then assist them in finding suitable
opportunities that meet that need, and provide
time. If needed electives are not available locally,
we work with our residents to find suitable experiences at other
sites in California.
