The Family Practice Center (FPC) is located in the Health Center North, a modern outpatient building adjacent to the hospital. This wing is shared with other primary care and specialty clinics. And among other conveniences, it has antenatal testing/ultrasound equipment, casting room, and imaging center. Pharmacy, laboratory and a Medicaid office are located nearby.
In addition to 16 exam rooms, the FPC has a minor surgery/procedure room. The preceptor's room is equipped with a library, computer with Internet access, and a closed circuit TV system. The conference room for noon lectures and faculty offices are also conveniently located in the same building. The administrative offices are located near the clinics.
During the 2003-2004 fiscal year, the FPC had 20,237 patient visits. Our population is representative of the racial and socioeconomic diversity of California. Because of our location, we serve both urban and rural populations.
Each resident cares for a group of families and follows them throughout the three years of residency. This patient panel is developed through transfers from graduating residents and new referrals. We see all types of patients, from pre-conception visits to end-of-life care, from health conscious, compliant and socio-economically secure to challenging patients with high-risk behaviors. This exposure to acute and chronic, common and rare conditions assures the continuous intellectual and skill development of our residents.
