San Joaquin General Hospital is located ten minutes south of Stockton, in an agricultural area that is rich in opportunities for diverse recreational activities. Stockton, a city of over 260,000 inhabitants, is the most inland, deep water seaport on the west coast, and has 1,000 miles of navigable Delta waterways with parks and camping/recreational facilities. Water sports such as boating, sailing, fishing, skiing, kayaking, wind surfing, and rafting are popular. San Joaquin County, with a population of 566,000, has a multi-cultural population of various national origins and socio-economic groups. Among these is a large Hispanic population, including many migrant workers.

Colleges
The University of the Pacific, the first chartered institution of higher learning in California, now offers more than 80 majors in twelve schools and colleges. Full-time enrollment is approximately 4,500.
San Joaquin Delta College, a public community college, has one of the largest campuses in California. Enrollment is approximately 19,000 students per semester. Students can choose from more than 115 areas of instruction.
Sacramento State University and Stanislaus State offer additional extension programs in Stockton.

Stockton has a central location, which allows for easy access to a myriad of outdoor, cultural and historical activities. Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains offers some of the finest summer and winter recreational activities in the Western united States. 80 miles from San Francisco, Stockton is close enough to easily enjoy Coast and Bay Area activities, and yet remain affordable. Yosemite National Park, the California Gold County and the State Capital are all within easy driving distance.
